Friends of the Oak Island Lighthouse Fund Raising

The Oak Island Lighthouse is a treasured regional and national attraction that is visited, not only by people vacationing here, but visitors from throughout the US. They come and spend time and money in our area. The Lighthouse is the reason they are here.

This summer, for the first time, the OI lighthouse was opened for regular tours. The public response exceeded expectations. Over 3500 people availed themselves of the Wednesday and Saturday open lighthouse tours or the scheduled appointments to the top of the lighthouse. Many hundreds more came just to see the lighthouse and to have their picture taken with the Lighthouse as a backdrop.

During this past year Friends of the Oak Island Lighthouse (FOIL) and the Town of Caswell Beach, along with assistance from a local land design firm, developed a site plan for the area surrounding the lighthouse. The plan is designed to provide protection and access to the lighthouse, and to restore the back dune ecological system.

The overall emphasis of the site development plan is to create a minimal maintenance system that allows public access to the lighthouse with minimal impact to the grounds. Costs associated with implementation of the site development project total $100,000. Funds needed to implement the site plan will come from individual and corporate donations supplemented with grants from funding organizations.

We need everyone’s help to raise the funds necessary to accomplish the task before us. The generosity of Friends of the Oak Island Lighthouse, both in our own community and communities outside Brunswick county, has been phenomenal. We expect to have a lighthouse site that rivals any other, that will be source of pride for our region.
